Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative

Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative

This site is a collaborative effort by federal agencies formed as a group in 2007 to define common guidelines, methods, and practices to digitize historical content in a sustainable manner. Recognizing that the effort would require specialized expertise, two separate working groups were formed with the possibility that more tightly focused groups might be necessary as the work progressed. The Federal Agencies Still Image Digitization Working Group will concentrate its efforts on image content such as books, manuscripts, maps, and photographic prints and negatives. The Federal Agencies Audio-Visual Working Group is focusing its work on sound, video, and motion picture film.
The group initially formed under the auspices of the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP), a program initiated by Congress in December 2000 to develop a national strategy to collect, archive and preserve digital content. Federal agencies represented on NDIIPP's National Digital Strategy Advisory Board formed the initial core of the group's membership.

Museums & Society 2034: Trends and Potential Futures

Museums & Society 2034: Trends and Potential Futures

What challenges will society and museums face in the next quarter-century? How will the demographic profile of America change between now and 2034? How will energy and infrastructure costs affect the sustainability of museums? What are the likely impacts of today's educational and regulatory priorities? What will Web 3.0 - or 5.0 or 6.0 - look like? Will the "real" survive the assault of the "virtual"? Will the number of leisure-time alternatives continue to grow? Will the lines between work and leisure, public and private, continue to blur? Most importantly, how will museums face these challenges and shape the future they will have to inhabit?

To find out, the Center for the Future of Museums (CFM) commissioned this discussion paper on social and cultural trends and their potential effect on museums. The report was prepared by James Chung, Susie Wilkening and the staff of Reach Advisors - a marketing strategy and research firm with extensive experience in the museum field - in consultation with CFM staff and outside experts.

This paper is designed to be a catalyst - a fact-based platform for further exploration, and refinement rather than the final word on museum trends. In that spirit, CFM will host discussions on the paper online and at the 2009 AAM Annual Meeting in Philadelphia and a scenario-planning session led by a prominent futurist.

LOCKSS

LOCKSS

LOCKSS (for "Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe") is open source software that provides librarians with an easy and inexpensive way to collect, store, preserve, and provide access to their own, local copy of authorized content they purchase. Running on standard desktop hardware and requiring almost no technical administration, LOCKSS converts a personal computer into a digital preservation appliance, creating low-cost, persistent, accessible copies of e-journal content as it is published. Since pages in these appliances are never flushed, the local community's access to that content is safeguarded. Accuracy and completeness of LOCKSS appliances is assured through a robust and secure, peer-to-peer polling and reputation system.
