LEMIEUX, Maurice

b. (c) 1932

A sculptor from Valleyfield, Quebec, self taught, he created one of the biggest metal sculptures in Canada on the exterior wall of the auditorium of the Seminary of Saint-Jean-d'Iberville. He worked for three months on his two-and-a-half ton creation. Originally he intended using 1/4" steel sheets but this would have doubled its weight. He chose 1/8 inch steel sheets and then reinforced the work with a framework similar to that used in an aeroplane wing. The sculpture which stands 35 feet high by 20 feet wide symbolizes the motto of the Seminary "Let us love one another". Lemieux has exhibited his work at the University of Montreal and the Biennial of Madrid in 1957; Saint Helene Island, 1958; Artek Gallery, 1959; Galerie Libre permanently since 1959.
