Mendel Art Gallery
Tourism Region: Saskatchewan
The Mendel Art Gallery officially opened on October 16, 1964. The construction of the facility, which includes a botanical conservatory, was made possible by a generous donation from Frederick S. (Fred) Mendel, a local industrialist and art collector. Mr. Mendel also donated a portion of his collection which formed the nucleus of the Gallery's permanent collection. The facility was expanded in 1976 with the addition of a gallery, offices and storage areas. The Mendel Art Gallery is registered as a Canadian charity certified under the Non-Profit Corporation Act of Saskatchewan as The Saskatoon Gallery and Conservatory Corporation.

About Collections
In 1965, a year after the facility opened, the Gallery's benefactor, Frederick S. (Fred) Mendel, donated thirteen paintings to the collection, including major works by the Group of Seven and their contemporaries. Although the Mendel Art Gallery's collection is international in overall scope, its primary focus is upon historical and contemporary Saskatchewan art. Canadian and international art is collected in order to contextualize the work of Saskatchewan artists from comparable periods. Because the province is uniquely rich in visual art, both established and promising younger or lesser known Saskatchewan artists are represented in the collection.
Approximate number of objects in the collections: 4000
